Week 2
On week 2, we showed our progress for Exercise 1 to Dr. Yip JinChi. We were advised to watch the pre-recorded lectures Topic 2 by our own.
Topic 2 is about Balance and Emphasis. And here's a short recap for this week lectures.
Balance: It's the distribution of visual weight of an art and it's also the key for the whole piece to come out perfectly balance.
Symmetrical - Equally distributed focus from the central point of one on each sides. It could be horizontal, vertically or radial form. It also can be approximate symmetrical with almost equal view divided from the central point but in their opposite sides, there're difference.
Asymmetrical - Unequal visual weight on each side of the composition. For example, one of the side might be more eye catching than another because the dominant is on there but it could still be balanced but compared to the dominant it has lesser focal points.
The Golden Ratio (phi) : Mathematical concept used as a guide to create visual balance with the Fibonacci Sequence for perfect arts.
Rule of Thirds: It's a composition guideline to create work which it can also used to be divided evenly into thirds.
Emphasis: Used to create dominance and focus in one.
Week 3
On week 3, we showed our progress for Exercise 2 in the principles of Emphasis either Balance to Dr. Yip JinChi and seek for her comments or feedbacks to see whether if there's any part could be improved. We were advised to watch the pre-recorded lectures Topic 3 by our own.
Topic for Lecture 3 is Repetition and Movement. And here's a short recap for this week lectures.
Repetition: Creates rhythm and pattern for the work with the elements of design which create visual interest in one. Variety is the essential in repetition.
Movement: The way of design leads your vision to follow their path which the objects are seem to be moving.
Hierarchy: Choreography of a content in a composition which directs viewers to look at the topic first. and get navigation from the secondary components.
Alignment: The placement of design elements with the same flow in common area. Creation of unity and cohesion to perceive stability.
Visual Research
Balance
Distribution of the visual weight of objects, colors, texture, and space.
If the design was a scale, these elements should be balanced to make a design feel
stable.
Symmetrical balance - The elements used on one side of the design are
similar to those on the other side.
Asymmetrical balance - The sides are different
but still look balanced.
fig 1.1 - symmetrical balance eg from pinterest
fig 1.2 - symmetrical balance eg from pinterest
fig 1.3 - symmetrical balance eg from pinterest
fig 1.4 - symmetrical balance eg from pinterest
We can see that from symmetrical balance, both of the sides and their opposite sides are in the same patterns and are equally divided from the central point.
fig 1.5 - asymmetrical balance eg from pinterest
fig 1.6 - asymmetrical balance eg from pinterest
fig 1.7 - asymmetrical balance eg from pinterest
And in asymmetrical, they were also being divided equally from the central point but with patterns on each sides. However, they're still perfectly balanced.
The Golden Ratio
The Golden Ratio is a mathematical ratio applied to design specifically, it creates an organic, balanced, and aesthetically pleasing composition.
It's also known as the Golden Section, Golden Mean, Divine Proportion, or the Greek letter Phi, the Golden Ratio is a special number that approximately equals 1.618. The ratio itself comes from the Fibonacci sequence, a naturally occurring sequence of numbers that can be found everywhere, from the number of leaves on a tree to the shape of a seashell.

Rule of Thirds
The rule of thirds is a compositional guideline that breaks an image down into thirds (both horizontally and vertically) so you have nine pieces and four gridlines. According to the rule, by positioning key elements along the gridlines, you’ll end up with better compositions. It generally leads to compelling and well-composed shots.

Emphasis
The part of the design that catches the viewer’s attention. Usually the
artist will make one area stand out by contrasting it with other areas. The area could
be different in size, color, texture, shape, etc.
Emphasis and contrast could be the same, but they aren’t. Contrast is when two objects are compared, and emphasis is when the object makes an impact. The best way to create a visually confusing effect is to use contrast to emphasize objects, for example, by placing a black ball on a white background. High contrast creates a strong impression: The focus of the viewer’s attention is immediately drawn to the heavy shape.

As we can see emphasis were carried out with different colours among others which tend to catch our eyeballs and attention at first sight.
Repetition
Repetition works with pattern to make the work of art seem active in creating rhythm. The repetition of elements of design creates unity within the work of art.
Pattern is the repeating of an object or symbol all over the work of art.
Rhythm is created when one or more elements of design are used repeatedly to
create a feeling of organized movement. Rhythm creates a mood like music or
dancing. To keep rhythm exciting and active, variety is essential.
Variety is the use of several elements of design to hold the viewer’s attention and
to guide the viewer’s eye through and around the work of art.

Movement
Movement is the path the viewer’s eye takes through the work of art, often to focal
areas. Such movement can be directed along lines, edges, shape, and color within the
work of art.
Hierarchy is the process of arranging elements in a composition so that it conveys information to the user in a simple manner.
In design, the alignment principle states that multiple objects are said to be aligned when they are placed such that their left or right edges, or center-lines line up on a common position.
Design Process & Idea Exploration
fig 5.1 - inspiration from pinterest
I got my inspiration for my balance design from pinterest as above, was thinking to use some geometric figures for my asymmetrical design and below is my sketch for it.
fig 5.1.1 - sketch draft for balance design
I use a straight line as my median and create a circle using the median line. I separated two parts from the circle which I decided to create different designs for both of the side. Width and length are both equal on both side which is 14cm respectively. My design came out as below.
I blended in with some structures like leaves, petals etc because I actually love drawing leaves and line art hehe that's why I chose them for my theme.
fig 5.2 - Design for balance
And for Emphasis, I decided to use collage method to bring out the concept as our DPI classes are also on-going this exercise for this week. So ya I decided to not waste the magazine I bought for my collage exercise hehe. I was thinking to use a person as my main title of art and with some other components beside as deco so my art doesn't look too bored.
fig 5.3 - sketch draft for emphasis design
Then, this is what I brought out. I flipped the magazine and saw David Beckham with his hot muscular body and then I saw few fragrance from another pages. So I decided to make a topic called 'Man in Style' with a grey-goldish background behind which I painted it with watercolour. And added a sign holding on his hand which can be related that man in 45 is a golden age and also a hat on his head so it not feel so boring. Oh ya and the white texts I border the man is to focus on my emphasis on David.
fig 5.4 - Design for emphasis 'Man in Style'
Then, I also completed some of others collage to bring out the design principles in emphasis.
fig 5.5 - Design for emphasis 'Vintage'
fig 5.6 - Design for emphasis 'Dior'
After I seek for Dr. Yip JinChi's comments on my emphasis collage fig 5.5, she asked me to change the compositions alittle and minimize the elements I also did some adjustment on that one then it comes out as below.
fig 5.7 - Design for emphasis 'Fish'
I've did some research on Pinterest and found an inspiration for the principles of movement.
fig 5.8- Inspiration of movement from Pinterest
As can see that, the sky of the art was designed in black and white columns and rows which could see like it's moving. And so I was inspired by this and created one of my own 'movement' design.
fig 5.9 - Design for Movement
Final Outcome
fig 6 - Final Design for Emphasis 'Perspectives'
After I took the comments and feedbacks from Dr.Yip, I decided to pick this one as my final between this and fig 5.7. I like this more for my emphasis design as it brings out a storyline as we can see that a pair of old couples viewing the big typewritter then the fish. It also leads us to view from the old couple then slowly to the fish. I bring out the fish as my emphasis in this with changing the colour of the fish to bright contrast orange which was originally mint green. This one was made with Photoshop, it's a digital collage.
fig 7 - Final Design for Movement 'Flows of Sky'
This one was also adjustment of fig 5.9 after seeking her advices. I make the buildings smaller and resized the flow of the sky so it could represent clearer that this my design for movement. The intention of creating this was because I randomly saw one pin on pinterest which is shown above in fig 5.8 which inspires me to make an art for my design principles movement exercise and this is what I came out with. I personally like this piece alot because of the texture of the moon and the flow of the sky hehe. This one was also created with Photoshop.
Feedbacks
Dr. Yip JinChi told me that visual study/reference for my art should be added into the design process too. For my design Fig 5.2, she said that it's nice but I need to show my reference which where I got my idea from. And for Fig 5.4, she intended that if the perfumes could be bigger and can be aligned in a better position would be better.
For fig 5.5, she said that's too much elements for emphasis which she can't recognize which to emphasis at first and then she asked me to change the fish to bright orange and remove few of the elements then reorganise them. Same for fig 5.6 too, elements need to be minimised to create emphasis.
For fig 5.8, she said the buildings covered the movement of sky as it's too big so she advised to resize the building into smaller size and larger the sky so it could bring out more on the principles movement of the sky.
Reflection
After exercise 1 given, exercise 2 was much easier to be completed as I kinda got it what we actually need to do and what actually need to be presented in our e-portfolios. Dr.Yip is so nice too which she gives like clear and detailed feedbacks on our arts and advises on which to choose for our final as I'm so confused on which to pick. And I was more self-disciplined and organised after the lessons learnt in exercise 1 which the progress previously was kinda rush and for this one I have make everything on set first and make sure to take down all the notes each week after the lectures so that I won't be too packed and crashes with the other courses exercises :p
Through this exercise given, I learnt that there're few principles to be followed to create arts in better visual and experience for viewers. And also I get to differentiate which principles that different arts are using respectively. This lecture helps me to make arts and designs in a more organised way with the principles given. Somehow I actually thought that arts were created just with the sense of self with our own sense of vision and art but then I guess it's not all right when it comes to principles as we need to follow the principles so that they could become more perfect. Like the use of golden ratio, Fibonacci Sequence. Most of the arts use them as guide, but little did we know before this was introduced to us. All arts were created with guidance but if we don't know the principles of design, we will never know that how it was created in a perfect ratio to create balance in visual.
