Week 4

On week 4, we showed our progress and final designs for Exercise 2 in the principles of Emphasis, Balance, Repetition and Movement to Dr. Yip JinChi and seek for her comments or feedbacks to see whether if there's any part could be improved. Submission for exercise 2 will be on this week. We were advised to watch the pre-recorded lectures Topic 4 by our own.

Topic for Lecture 4 is Harmony and Unity. And here's a short recap for this week lectures.

Harmony is a combination of a selection of elements with common traits. It's the sense of all the elements of your design fit well together in the same theme, style or mood.

Unity is the repetition of particular elements in colors, shapes or materials throughout the design. It occurs when elements are organized in a balanced way which provide a sense of unity.

Dr. Yip also explained the concept of scale and proportion which is additional lecture.

Scale is the size of one related to another in an art. Scale can be determined by actual measurements and visual estimates based on comparison.

However, proportion refers the the size of the parts of one related to the other parts of the same object. It's the relationship of two or more elements in a composition.

Week 5

On week 5, we showed our progress for Exercise 3 in the principles of Harmony or Unity to Dr. Yip JinChi and seek for her comments or feedbacks to see whether if there's any part could be improved. We were advised to watch the pre-recorded lectures Topic 5 by our own.

Topic for Lecture 5 is Symbol, Word and Image. And here's a short recap for this week lectures.

What's a symbol? Symbol is a sign, shape or object used to represent something. It can provide information or even a whole story.
It's to be categorized by pictorial symbols, abstract symbols, and arbitrary symbols in graphic symbols.

Following up, is Word and Image. Imagery is significant key in design. For the right image used, information will be related to users or viewers accurately. On the other hand, choosing the right words to relate with the image is also important in bringing out the information that wanted to be carry out.

Visual Research

Harmony

The sense that all of the elements of your design fit together. They may fit the same theme, aesthetic style or mood. The important takeaway is that each distinct piece seems to belong together in some way, even if it is not identical to anything else.

Unity

Unity is the principle of art that gives an artwork a feeling of “oneness”. Unity and harmony are similar, but unity is more broad. There are numerous ways to create unity in art. Some of those ways are particular to individual artist’s style. Unity is about separate parts working together.

Scale & Proportion

Scale:
The principle of scale refers to the relative size of one object compared to another, typically the size of the artwork to the viewer’s body. Scale can also refer to the size relationships of different visuals within a singular piece of art.

Proportion:
Proportion refers to the relationship of parts of a body or form to one another and of the parts to the whole, for example, the size of the head of a figure in relation to the entire body.

Symbol

A sign or icon that can used to represent something. In design, it can used to bring out information that we want us to be carry out to the readers or viewers.

Symbol have two categories which are Figurative Representations and Non-Figurative Representations. In Figurative Representations, there're visuals and graphic symbols. And in graphic symbols, it's being categorize to pictorial, abstract, and arbitrary symbols.

Pictorial Symbols - Image-related and simplified pictures.

Abstract Symbols - Icons look like the objects that they represent but with less details.

Arbitrary Symbols - Have no resemblance to the objects to be represent, it's invented with meaning. Many are based on geometric shapes and colours.

Word and Image

Imagery is a key while designing, it may be printed or digitalise. With the right and suitable image used, users and viewers will get to relate the information that we're trying to carry out.

Afterwards, the right words or title should be chosen wisely to pair with the imagery. This is to deepen the meaning of design.

Design Process & Idea Exploration

After learning through and understands all the principles for this exercise, I chose to further my designs with the following principles which are unity and harmony.

This time, I decided to draw for both of my designs. First of, I started with my design for unity which I was inspired while watching the lecture and saw the examples given in the pre-recorded lecture video for unity.

fig 7.1 - Examples in pre-recorded lecture  (unity)

With this one, I decided to use Typography to create my design for unity.
I was actually great at drawing flowers, floral stuffs back then. So I would like to use them as my elements to create a unity principles Typography. So I sketch my ideas out first and showed Dr. Yip JinChi to see whether is this approved. And yes it's and then I did some compositions for the letters to see in which style it'll come off in a better visual and effects.

fig 7.3 - Second composition for unity Typography

After sketching all the compositions I think of, I then decided to stick with the middle one on fig7.3. Next, I sketch this composition on my artblock which I'm using it to draw the final out.

fig 7.4 - Final sketch  for unity Typography

Afterwards, I fill in colours for them with watercolour. I paint them with few layers of shades so that it could look more realistic and not just solid colours. And also I added outlines for it, to sharpen the edges of the flowers.

Moving forward with the next principles I chose, harmony. For harmony, I was inspired by few pins I randomly saw on Pinterest.

fig 7.6 - Inspiration from Pinterest (harmony)

fig 7.7 - Inspiration from Pinterest (harmony)

As we can see above, the both watercolour arts are in same scheme of colour which mainly is green. I conclude what I understood and then picked a colour scheme first. I chose blue and then I sketch out a girl figure on my artblock and then work with it.

Then I started using watercolours and paint it. The main scheme colour I chose for this is blue. And this is how it comes out as.

Final Outcome

Unity

fig 8.1 - Final Outcome // Bloom in Flowers (unity)

As shown previously on fig 7.5, this one was an advanced version with gold borders added outside the letters. This was to emphasise the word 'bloom'. Actually this also includes the principles of  harmony with the colour used. I gathered all the flowers together to form a unity for the word bloom which makes it looks like they're all linked together. I make the word 'bloom' composites in a way that it really looks like it's blooming upwards.

Harmony

fig 8.2 - Final Outcome // Girl in Melancholy (harmony)

My final outcome I was using fig 7.9 but then I bring it into Photoshop and did some further adjustments on it. As see above in fig 7.9, the colour was too contrast which isn't what I wanted it to be and for the butterflies, it's actually kinda ugly hahaha. The collarbone of the girl was kinda dirty too which looks like watercolour isn't mixed well. By that, I used Photoshop to erase my mistakes manually.
I named this art as 'Girl in Melancholy', it's because I like the colour blue and the colour blue reminds me of melancholy. I also think that butterflies bring a strong sense of sadness so I applied these elements on my art to bring out the principle of harmony in my design.

Feedbacks

On week 5, I showed Dr. Yip JinChi of my sketch for unity which was shown as fig 7.2 above. Then she said that this idea can work but she advised me to draw out few more compositions for the letters again as this one was vertical, she said it would be better in horizontal. And also, she asked me to think of the word 'bloom', its direction and how it's grow out maybe I can explore the compositions with this idea.

Then, I showed her my idea for harmony which I was inspired in Pinterest, showed as fig 7.6 & 7.7. She said that's fine too, I can work with them.

Reflection

Through this exercise given, I've learn that there're actually names for the principles applied on arts. For example, I previously don't know what to call the arts with same colour schemes, when I'm impressed by these arts, I'll only express with ' wow, good colour schemes used in it, so smooth.' instead of 'good uses of harmony applied in it.' And also, I've learn that with unity applied in arts, our arts can be more in orders and also in a better composition too. These principles given are to improve us on creating better arts in better visuals. Then, I've also learnt on how to differentiate symbols of pictorial, abstract, and arbitrary symbols. This let me knows that what types symbols did different luxury brands and branding are applying.

Throughout my design progress, I find that is easy to understand the principles but then it's quite challenging when bringing them into our designs. I was kinda scared of spoiling everything up when applying the watercolours on my designs at first. I was scared that the colours will not come out as I expected which may ruined the principles. To conclude, when applying these principles, we need to be very careful and aware of the elements we're using. With the right elements and concepts used, the principles will also be brought out effectively.
