LECTURES

Week 1: Miss Noranis and Mr. Hafiz briefly discussed about our expectations and outlines for this semester and they let us play a tutorial game for us to know how the pen tool works called The Bezier Game.

Week 2: We were taught by Mr. Hafiz on how to use the pen tool to trace the shapes given in Google Classroom which were used for our Vormator Challenge. Sketches need to be done for our vormator challenge by next class with the shapes given and also with story lines provided. We then were asked to choose one animated cartoon or anime character then write a short report (min.300words) about how the character design elements works in relation to their personality and story in the media.

Week 3: We were being taught on how to make paths and shapes for our Vormator Challenge by Mr.Hafiz. And then, Ms.Anis introduced the Chiaroscuro theory to us which were being used in black and white films. We were asked to write a report of our visual study in Chiaroscuro with one movie scene.

Week 4: This week lecture is composition theory 1- visual types and shots. Our visual should capture on the following rules which are visual narrative, visual flow, visual balance and visual hierarchy. There're 6 types of shots which are establishing, frame within a frame, bird's eye view, worm's eye view, medium shot and close-up. We were then asked to use our phone and take pics of the six different types of compositions introduced in this lecture.

TASKS

Task 1: Exercise 1&2

INSTRUCTIONS

Exercise 1: Vormator Challenge

We were give a set of shapes to use pen tool and trace them out to form our own unique character. The followings are the set of shapes given for us to design our character throughout this exercise.

fig 3.1 - shapes given for ex 1

I've make a few Sketches before I start on creating something and also did get some inspiration from Pinterest so that my mind can figure something out and pop out some designs.

These are some inspiration got from Pinterest for my Vormator Challenge exercise.

After watching these, I did some few sketches on my ideas and structures of my character. And these are how my ideas are...

fig 3.5 - sketches for ex 1

After few considerations and attempts it's better to stick with ideas relevant like the second one which is the right above. So I started tracing shapes I want and build up a structure. And this is how it looks like.

fig 3.6 - Vormator Challenge (first attempt)

This is a creature with a structure of lion head which is our typical Chinese new year one and with the arms of the octopus. I even add on some antler above it eyes which is an inspiration I got from fig 3.2. As can see above, my Vormator Challenge Character was previously too flat and have no textures or realistic effects. By then, I added on some patterns on his hat then some shadows on its arms and make some adjustments on the arms too and here comes my final submission for the Character.

Exercise 2: Vector Illustration

Now that we have our own monster Character, we are then to create the game card for our character. With the background needed in the game card design. I went to Pinterest to get the inspiration again hehe.

And then with the following inspiration from Pinterest, I straight kick start the progress for Exercise 2 with Illustrator without any sketches. And this is what comes out with the game card.

Afterwards, I added the background on the empty white border space on the card. My idea was to create a horrible nightmare scene which we typically watched in cartoons. A scene when the moon falls, in the dark forest with a creature living deep down there. And then here's how my background looks like inside the border of the game card...

Lastly, I added in my monster Character in it which I gave him a name called MouMou and with his introduction on the yellowish golden part in the border. And this is my final.
