LECTURES

Week 5: This week lecture is composition theory 3 - fore, mid and background. When composing a scene, creating an effective sense of the space is very important. There're different types of planes which are foreground, middle-ground and background. Foreground are objects that are nearest to the viewer. Middle-ground are objects in between foreground and background. Background are objects that are furthest away from the viewer. We were then asked to write a lecture report on differentiate the grounds.

EXERCISES

We were assigned to create chiaroscuro with the following two pics with pathfinders and colours to create shades on practical lessons.

fig 5.2 - Chiaroscuro exercise reference(skeleton)

Then, with the pics given, we were asked to create a sliced pear with seeds in it and also to match the pear with the skeleton shades. Below is how my works look like.

Poster

For the poster, at first I was thinking on deciding which movie to choose. First movie to come in my mind was 'LalaLand'. The second one is 'Tangled'. Then I went up to Pinterest and find some ideas, and here're some references I found on Pinterest for my poster ideas.

Then, I went to do some research on the movie 'Tangled' too. There's one scene I really love in the movie which is the scene that Flynn and Rapunzel watching the sky lanterns released by the king and queen on her birthday on the boat. That scene was amazing. I remembered back as a kid when I first watched this movie, my mouth was reacting wow when I saw this scene as it's really mesmerising.

And so, I decided to work with the movie 'Tangled' with the sky lantern scene.
As the lantern was released from the kingdom and this scene was took part above the lake on the boat with this posing hands holding.
So I decided to make a poster of this with a beautiful lilac sky background because whenever I see lilac or purple, they must represent to Rapunzel.
Here are some progress I did for the poster and the illustrations details.

fig 6.3.1 - Background

For the poster background, was created with the tool gradient with purple colours scheme. Then, I also added the texture of grain so that it looks like a fairytale vibes.

fig 6.3.2 - Sky lanterns

For the sky lanterns, I used the tool gradient to make the dim and contrasts of lights and also I added the effect 'outer glow' so it looks like the lantern is glowing itself.

fig 6.3.3 - Title

For the title, I created a curve path with pen tool then I type the text on the path created so it looks like it's curved instead of being fully horizontal.

fig 6.3.4 - Clouds 1

fig 6.3.5 - Clouds 2

For the clouds, colour was also created by the gradient tool and besides I've also added the effect 'feather' so it looks like cotton candy on the sky which make it blends well above the sky. I've added the texture grain for this too.

With the elements created above, I've done few layouts and attempts.

fig 6.4.1 - Tangled Poster (1st attempt)

For my 1st attempt, I've asked comments from my friends, they said that the lanterns were too much so then for my 2nd attempt I cut the amount off.

fig 6.4.2 - Tangled Poster (2nd attempt)

I set different opacity for the sky lanterns. The ones at the front with 100% opacity but then on the back are with lower opacity so the depth effect could be created.
Then, I found that the colour of the lanterns were kinda boring so I decided to create two different colours for the lanterns so it might look more interesting.

fig 6.4.5 - Tangled Poster (4th attempt)

Then with the lantern of colours created, I've played with few layouts as shown above. Then I decided to work with the layout on 4th attempt. So I make changes with it to make it look more interesting and see how if I can advanced with this one.
I decided to create a vignette on the corner of my poster and this is my 1st attempt for the vignette.

fig 6.4.6 - Tangled Poster (1st attempt for vignette)

As can see that, it was too dirty and looks more like a stage light light spotting them so I make changes with the opacity and changed the colour fill with gradient instead of solid colour black.
I also sharpen the their face gestures too as the longer I looked at them, they kinda looks like animal ahahah
So here's my final poster in pdf form~

Poster GIF

For the gif, I've created a new layout of the poster.
My intention was to make the boat of them flowing above the water and then the lanterns slowly going above then a big spotlight holding between them gets bigger then slowly cover the whole screen.

fig 6.5.1 - Layout created for GIF

For my 1st attempt on the GIF, I set different opacity on each different laterns which means each lanterns opacity are different on each artboards.
This was to create the effect of shining for the lanterns. It was quite challenging tbh because you need to be very careful so everything won't goes wrong at the end.
And here's my 1st attempt for GIF.

fig 6.5.2 - Poster GIF (1st attempt)

Okay so... my 1st attempt of GIF was totally a disaster....
The lanterns look too crowded, the boat and castles placement were not adjusted well... Hence, I decided to make just the lanterns in a flow and make the placement of the boat and castles in nice position.
For my GIF, I used totally 46 artboards and here are the artboards I made.

For my final GIF, it looks more like a short teaser actually so ya, enjoy~
