Lectures

Week 11

We were asked to express typographically a social message, greeting or the like, that is relevant to the campus community at Taylor’s University or society at large. We were given a variety of choices to choose for the greetings on the google drive file. Well, I've chosen the greeting 'Merry Christmas'.

Then, Mr.Vinod assigned us to sketch out 6 designs for the existing greetings we've chosen for this task then only we can start to digitalise it.

Besides, we were also asked to read the article on how to create telegram stickers.

Task 3B

In task 3B, we were assigned to create a sticker for telegram with the greetings chosen. The sticker must be designed in lettering forms or with the existing typefaces, or modify the typefaces. The greetings sticker must be expressed in its meaning with only minor graphical elements used. Colours to be used for designing the sticker are white, red and black only.

I've chosen the greeting 'Merry Christmas' among all of them. This was because Christmas is a unique and special festival to me.

When I was little, I always like the vibes given by Christmas. Shopping malls, car's radio, decorations, parties and more. It was always filled with joy. Besides, it was also my birthday~ This is why I picked 'Merry Christmas' for this task.

1.Sketches

Before doing sketches for my stickers, I've done some research on Pinterest to get some inspirations.

I have gotten few ideas from the inspiration I found and then I kick started my sketching progress. For the letterings, I decided to use hand written calligraphy for my sticker because I'm good at writing western calligraphies back then. Here are the 6 designs of sketches I've done before entering the phase for digitalisation.

On week 11, after gotten my feedbacks from Mr.Vinod, I decided to work with the design on the left bottom.

However, we were asked to avoid negative spaces in our stickers and to well use the spaces on the artboard of 512px x 512px. By that, I refigured my designs out, and did some changes and improvements on it.

2.Digitalisation

Well entering the phase of digitalisation for my letterings, which my intention is to create calligraphies. To be honest, it was such a pain in my butt :,) I used existing typefaces at first, then thinking to linking the strokes together with paths either brushes. But it fails anyways.

So I used existing typefaces 'Bodoni Std Italic', and then modify it using paths. To create linkings between the letters, I used paths. Calligraphies is special on its strokes, so I adjusted each of the paths created with width tool just so each letters have different strokes.

Here's the outcome for my digitalisation.

fig 1.5 - digitalisation for sticker, 11/06

For special letters like 'M', 'y', 'C' and 't', I extended the tails with paths and some with brushes, but most of it are paths just so I could adjust the strokes.

Graphical elements are drawn using pen tool. the border around was intention of creating a frame for my sticker so it looks more neat and more like a piece.

On week 12, after getting my feedbacks from Mr.Vinod, I increase the strokes for all of the letterings. And also added a shadow below. Well, here's how it looks like.

fig 1.6 - digitalisation coloured 1st attempt, 14/06

Then I asked for feedbacks again, he said that I should create something inside the white frame to break out the negative spaces. Hence, I've tried redesigning it with few attempts.

fig 1.8 - digitalisation coloured 3rd attempt, 14/06

Then I was thinking instead of creating a white sticker, why not try a red one. So here's another I've done.

Moving to the next part, I tried published them into telegram to see which one looks better as a sticker form. Well, view from Illustration and as sticker are different as in sticker form, the size and everything will be minimise.
Here's how it looks publishing in telegram.

Anyways, I removed the shadows which I added previously as it's not really visible in night mode plus it looks a little bit messy.
I insist that the red one looks more fun and contrast to catch viewer's eye but I also like the white coloured sticker too. So I have two versions for my greeting stickers 'Merry Christmas'.

Then I added borders outside for the sticker as Mr.Vinod mentioned.

Feedbacks

Week 11:

General Feedback: Need to maximise use of the size of 512px x 512px for the sticker design.

Specific Feedback: There're too much graphical elements used for design, try to focus on the lettering itself. Can work with the bottom left, probably add in more sparkles or minor elements to maximise the space.

Week 12:

General Feedback: Need to maximise use of the size of 512px x 512px for the sticker design. Avoid white spaces in the stickers.

Specific Feedback: Try increasing the strokes of the letterings, it's too thin. The design is ok but there're too much white spaces in it. Can add in sparkles in the negative spaces too to avoid the spaces and to create something like snow flakes falling.

Week 13:

General Feedback: Choose one that's more sharp and catch your eye.

Specific Feedback: This design is better as with the sparkles added in. It's good that I manage to break the spaces between and the contrast still remain on the letterings. Good job.

Week 14:

General Feedback: -

Specific Feedback: Add a white border outside.

Reflections

Experience: Throughout task 3B, it's much more easier for me to kick start the progress with the knowledge gained on the previous tasks, task 2A and 3A. As we've already gotten the idea on how to start with everything. Ideas on sketching was kinda easy to be brought out. Just only when it comes to the digitalisation phrase, it took quite some time for me to create the letterings as to link the letters, I'll need to add in strokes separately with different width respectively. In that, the letters will be linked smoothly. I also need to blow up super big to see whether the strokes are connected accurately together. After done with constructing the letterings, the designing parts don't take as much time as the letterings because I just use pen tool and shapes to create those elements. The other thing that concerned me was the negative spaces. I've tried few attempts, positions and designs to find out which has fully used of the space but still I managed~

Observations: With task 3B given, I've find that creating a sticker isn't as hard as I think. Just few points need to be remembered which are maximise use of the size, interesting letterings and frame around it. With effectively using the spaces, your sticker will looked not too empty and blank. Besides, with interesting letterings and layout is the intention to catch viewer's attention and to know what we were to express. Then for the frame around it is to gather the whole thing together as a group so it don't look like a part of it is loose apart.

Findings: In task 3B, I've learn to focus my designs expression on the letterings instead of the elements. Typography is meant to contrast the patterns and designs of the letterings and not the designs of the graphical elements which might steal over its spotlight. I've also learn on how to maximise use of the spaces and not just create a sticker with a lot white spaces. Last but not least, I finally know how to publish stickers pack on telegram which I might try publishing more in the future :>

Further Readings

Based on the list of recommended readings in the MIB, I did some further reading on this one.

1. Saltz, I (2019). Typography Essentials Revised and Updated : 100 Design Principles for Working with Type. Edition: Revised and updated. Beverly, MA : Rockport Publishers.

Chapter 1: The Letter

9. Being Expressive
A STRONG TYPOGRAPHIC PERSONALITY can be a very effective showstopper. Any and all effects can be used to express the meaning of the text, including hand-drawn lettering, modified typography, and distorted or manipulated letterforms, as long as they are created in service of the content or to amplify the meaning of the text.

Chapter 2: The Word

44. Mixing many typefaces
When mixing typefaces within a document, bear in mind that, as always, each choice should serve a specific need and must exist in a harmony and balance with other typefaces.

49. Using the right type
FINDING THE RIGHT TYPE is just as important as finding the right soul mate. Every project embodies a spirit, and choosing the right type for the project will amplify and clarify its spirit as well as its message. Understanding what is to be communicated and to whom should help to navigate the vast universe of available typefaces.
