Tasks

Task 1: Proposal

After our first lecture, we were assigned to think of a topic. Here are a few topics our group members brainstorm:

  • Baba nyonya
  • Wayang kulit (P.Ramlee)
  • Wedding culture (wedding dress)
  • Lat
  • Mural Art
Then, we all decided to go with the wedding dress one since it's more interesting and as we all know wedding dresses are all girl's favorite. We also asked Ms. Noranis for her feedback about this and she gave us approval. So, we all started to discover this topic and conclude all the things we have found into a slide.

Sadly, Mr. Asrizal suggested that we limit our attention to the songket. We revised our suggestion in the manner of Mr. Asrizal. We discovered that songket was steadily disappearing in Malaysia during our research on the topic. In addition, because machine-woven songket is a more affordable alternative compared to traditional hand-woven songket, which is more expensive. Songket crafts may eventually be forgotten as there is less demand for traditional songket, as no one wants to learn it. Our attention has been drawn to this issue, so we would want to explore potential avenues for protecting songket through this initiative.

Mr. Asrizal and Ms. Noranis advise that we choose the first or third idea after we had our presentation in class. After talking it over with our groupmates, we decide to use the first idea, the immersive projection due to the inspiration by Van Gogh. As we all know, it was a trend on using exhibiting art in the current exhibitions plus its also cost-saver and eco-friendly.

Task 2: Data Collection

During our data collection phase, we decided to get our data from these few methods below.
  • Google form survey: to understand the public's perception, and awareness to preserve on songket
  • Documentary (YouTube): to have a detailed understanding of the songket history
  • Museum visit (National Textile Museum): to study the making process of songket
  • Field visit to shops that sell songket: to study the current market of songket
  • interview with Yustie Dienna, modernize songket designer (failed): interview her inspiration experience and perception of modernized songket.

Museum Visit
On our visit to National Textile Museum, we referred to some motif designs from the cloth exhibited. Besides, we have also learned the process of making different kinds of cloth, for example, batik, ikat limar, cheongsam etc.

Field Visit
After our visit to National Textile Museum, we went to the area nearby which sells songket to investigate the current market of songket. First, we went to a building called Wisma Yakin which has a lot of tailoring shop that supplies a variety of clothes like Songket, Batik, and others. We had a brief conversation with the owner of Y.S. Tailoring Sdn Bhd about Songket. Luckily, the shop owner is very polite and was really courteous to us. She described to us the price that a hand-woven Songket could reach, up to a thousand ringgit, depending on the design. We then only know all Songket sold in the market here are all machine-made, and hand-woven will only be available in Terengganu. Somehow, some of them only sell Sampin which is apparel made by machine-made  Songket. The majority of the time now, individuals wear songket on significant occasions, and the designs are merely decorative and have no particular significance.
Here are some pics taken while we're there.

Next, we went to Jaker Mall which was suggested by another shop owner who said that there were different kinds of clothes sold in the mall. So we went there and see if we could dig deeper into the market of Songket. However, the Jaker Mall is more like a commercial mall that sells all machine-made clothes and the promoter somehow doesn't know much about the Songket and only knows how to sell them.

There are many more pics taken during our visit to the museum and field visit. Here's the link to all the photos taken:

After our visit, we were then assigned by our group leader, Carmen to do the other data collection method by teaming up with another member in pairs. I teamed with Carmen and she suggested we could find Yustie Dienna, a local designer who modernizes clothes into apparels.
Then, I send her our formal invitation for an interview through Instagram as we couldn't find her other social platforms. However, we didn't get to receive a reply from her instead a 'seen' ;,(.

Task 3: Final Project

In this task, we were asked to conduct our immersive projection of Songket physically. We were all assigned to design motif patterns of types of motifs elements like animals, plants, pixelated patterns, and kuih-muih. I was assigned to do the plants one.

Then we were assigned by Carmen to animate the motif into an animation clip to be exhibited later on our clothes. This is the tutorial video for me to animate my motif.

After we had all done this part, I compile all the animated motif clips together and do the immersive projection on campus's photoshoot studio. Here's a short trailer of us made by Jamie in the immersive projection-making.

Here's our final outcome of the compiled immersive projection.

Feedback

Week 01 (10/01/2023)
Mr.Asrizal: For the wedding dress idea, we can make comparisons between different cultures, for the art style, as one is a film and one is a cartoon, is hard to make comparisons, unless finding out one film which has similar messages in comics.

Ms.Anis: Can try to combine different cultures' wedding gowns design, for example, the motifs on the dresses. Do more research on it, and don't come out with the final outcome first, because sometimes during research you might find out a more decent and fun way to present that kind of culture.

Week 02 (17/01/2023)
Ms.Anis: Do more research first, then see what you can do based on the research. Break down the ideas according to the design system.

Week 04 (31/01/2023)
Prefer the 1st idea (immersive projection) and 4th idea (animated poster, the one with the radiation). Overall done quite well. Move on to the decision-making, data collection, and technical research. If want to do the immersive projection can just use the normal projector.

Reflection

In this module, I was given a great opportunity to discover our traditional cloth, Songket. It was a great experience in knowing the history of development, revolution, and the making behind it. As it has such a valuable historical legacy, I genuinely believe it should be protected and promoted as much as possible. Our group wants to learn more about Songket and advocate for its preservation through this effort. According to our research, we have learned a lot about Songket throughout our museum visit and field trip by doing a lot of exploring.
The 12 types of motifs occasionally appear to be muddled, but closer inspection reveals their beauty and that they are distinctive. I enjoy designing the motifs as I was so excited about the outcomes and was really into plant doodles since young. But going to the animation part, I am super lost and don't know how to mask my own designs into the frame luckily Carmen guided me through the progress and the outcome was perfectly amazing.
Looking back, the work we have done was totally worth the final outcome. Even though, I might be a little jealous of the Japan trip students but looking to our job. Bro, it's definitely a big treasure we've gotten through this module. Getting the chance to explore and discover the Malay Culture was unique and like a rare gem as usually I won't even get in touch with these.
Overall, am really satisfied with the outcome and thank my group members for paying great efforts in contributing to each tasks. The result wouldn't be the same without them. I hope they enjoy this task as I do!!
