Project 1 // Instructable Poster

INSTRUCTION
Create an infographic poster for ONE recipe selected from Pasta GranniesStudy one video, breakdown and chunk the preparation and cooking process into an instructable poster. Try to capture each Grandma’s personality and unique dish identity in your poster as part of the narrative structure.

Poster size: 1240 × 1750 pixels or 2048 × 2048 pixels

EXPLORATION
First and foremost, based on the requirement, I watched few videos on Pasta Grannies, and after few days of navigation, I decided to lock my target on baking pastries. Hence, I've picked the Helena's Apple Struddel making video as the steps are more easier and simple to understand. Also, I like the whole frame which is in kinda woody and beige background.
After having my pick, I breakdown the steps into my notes and started to look up for some moodboard and references on Pinterest.

Moodboard and Reference from Pinterest:

After browsing enough on the internet for inspirations, I wanted to make my poster looks simple and kinda like doodle style. I first started off with my illustration progress. The first thing I drew is the apple strudel which my intention is to create a huge detailed apple strudel on the side just like how the above poster do (theirs are on the center) to catch the viewer's eye first then they'll get attracted and slowly leading them to look on the other small things and steps around it. Well here's an overview of my apple strudel's outline in AI.

fig 1.2 - outlines of apple strudel in AI

Me now looking to this:🤢🤮
Reason why: I spent a whole day sitting infront of my laptop investigating the look and details and layers of pastry of the apple strudel and drew this thing out. Wondering who will be looking at this pic deeply for the whole day to draw this. Was tiring but outcome was so fine I am so hepi😚 SATISFIED🥰
Anyways here's my reference pic to sketch it out:

Final outcome of Illustration of Apple Strudel:

I adjusted the colours of the layers of the pastry paths by paths to create a more realistic effect so it won't look too flat and too boring to catch the viewer's attention. Besides, the apple fillings inside the pastry was also adjusted with curve tool to make the colour more dimensional 3D? Well after drawing this apple strudel (I think I used all my energy on this), the other kitchen appliances I decided to go with simple mode haha (draw with shapes)
ok so here's my final AI assets for the poster:

I make the sleeves of the hands kneading the dough in blue because Helena is wearing checkered blue top in the video. Besides the spoon are all in wood materials as the spoon in the video look like it.

Now we have all our assets and it's time organize them into poster! yay~ so here's my "low budget" sketch on a random paper I took beside me of the organisation and layouts. pls don't laugh at me...

With this idea, here's how my poster looks like:

Then I found out the red spot area was abit blank like negative spaces. So I added wordings "enjoy!"
Here's two different placement of the word "enjoy" and lastly I decided to go with the second one.

Animating Poster:

Before I start animate the poster, I seperate the layers and set up the layer for each frame in AI first. In convenient for me to adjust the position and motion later in AE.

After seperating all the layers into different files, I drag them all into AE to animate the scenes and frames. Motion blur and easy ease are applied on the keys to create smoothness between the motions of the layers.

After done the adjustment of the animation, I drag all the clips into Premiere Pro and compile it. Background music was searched from Youtube and I used the Ytb converter convert the audio I want into MP3. Here's my final animated instructable poster.

Project 2 // Kinetic Typography

INSTRUCTION
We are required to choose a music and create a motion lyrics for it. This was conducted as a group assignment.

EXPLORATION
During the week 1, we are assigned to discuss with our group and decide the music & art direction that we want to be focusing and developing on. We worked in a group of 7, discuss the materials together and finalise the idea of choosing the MV : Made you look by Meghan Trainor.

MV of Made You Look by Meghan Trainor

Official Lyrics Video of Made You Look

With the setup of the MV, we all agreed to make it into like Barbie's fancy pinkish vibes. Upon the discussion, we created a miro board for our moodboard, color template and font decided to be applied on the lyrics video.

fig 3.1 - miro moodboard

After that, we were assigned to choose our own part and start the progress of animating the lyrics. Here's my lines to be animated.

fig 3.2 - assigned lines

I first drew some doodles and flowers in AI then bring them into AE and adjust the layers to create motion on them.
Why draw doodles and flowers illustration thingy? Because my part is the chorus. To be honest I was very worried on how can I do good to stand out the chorus as it's the highlight of the whole lyrics video.
Then, we got our first feedback from Mr.Martin said the key for this assignment is not the animation, it's the the graphic design and composition. So ya, gonna draw some beautiful outstanding illustrations to make the chorus look outstanding than others as only my part having them illustrations😀

fig 3.3 - progress in AE (LOOK)

Ok not gonna lie, I low key like the fonts we chosen for the lyrics video. Especially when animating this part, I purposely draw two diamonds in the centre of the two "O"s to make them look like eyes blinking. Which stands out the meaning "look".👀

fig 3.4 - progress in AE (GUCCI)

For this Gucci part, I purposely went up to Google to search for Gucci's font and download it and used it. Anyways at first I can't find the font but then after half an hour I found it in a browser and it named the font as "Gucci" which exactly the font name is "Gucci"😃 (I think it's not what the font official name la)
Besides I also searched from the internet for suitable Gucci prints that suits with the them so I can applied on the Gucci texts then I found this pattern and I mask it into the text in AI. So pinkish so Barbie-ish~

fig 3.5 -gucci prints

fig 3.6 - progress in AE (LV)

For the LV part, I also went to google for the font. Surprisingly they're using Futura which the font we are kinda familiar with!! But the original one stroke was too thin light. If I used it with the background, it might be blended with the patterns and the viewer might lost the focus on the texts instead of having it on the background. So I use Futura book the increase the stroke of it to create contrast and stands out.

Final outcome of Kinetic Typography ( Individual Lines) :

After getting feedbacks from Mr.Martin, my part was fine but some of my members need to make amendment on some the parts. Then, my group leader compile all of our individual lines together and submit it.

Final outcome of Kinetic Typography ( Group 1.5 ) :

Exercise 4: Bar Chart

INSTRUCTION
Create a motion graphic chart. We are divided into 4 categories, in which different individuals will responsible for either one of the graphic chart (donut chart, pie chart, bar chart and line graph).

The assigned Animation graphic chart : Bar chart

Here's the lecture video provided by Mr.Martin.

I followed the steps above the video and then created my own composition of motion
graphic bar chart. Here's my final submission for the task.

1st draft:

I noticed my title was wrong and it was not smooth the animation. So I added motion blur, easy ease and also added some text animation on the title later on to make it more interesting. Besides, I also extend the duration to enable the reader to view on the texts longer.

Final outcome of Motion Graphic Chart( Bar Chart ) :

Exercise 5: Vector Animation

INSTRUCTION
We are required to create the vector or character animation based on the assigned task. We are divided into 4 categories, in which different individuals will be responsible for either one (A, B, C, or D) of the graphics provided.

The assigned vector / character animation : C

fig 4.1 - progress in AE

First of all, I seperate all the layers in AI so I could animate it later on on AE. I adjust to make the fan rotate and also applied puppet tool on the clouds so that they look squishy and soft.

Final outcome of Vector Animation :

Reflection

Overall through this two project 1 & 2, I get to learn alot on organizing with LATCH principles which may be helpful on creating infographics and posters in our future. Besides, I also get to use AE much more than the previous semester and also know that there're tools and ways that can make the whole animation go smoother and easier to animate.

Project 1 is very suffocating and alot of sleeps and efforts are being spend on it to make the illustrations good. To be honest, it was my very first time using AI to draw so complicated things, the apple strudel. I always thought it was very hard to draw things in AI using only mouse but not pen. And I thought that I'll never get the skill to draw illustrations but it turns out oppositely in the first time! I was surprised that I have drawn that apple strudel only using AI with a mouse with only a pen tool instead of Apple Pencil (always think that only Procreate can make drawing easier). I am very satisfied with the outcome and also enjoy in the progress of learning skills in each aspects too!

For Project 2, it was a group project. I think our group is sort of kinda responsible as we all get to complete the assigned lines in time to get feedbacks from Mr.Martin. They're all very participative in giving ideas. I enjoy doing this task too as I enjoy making the typo movesss!! Overall, a great experience being in a group project! Good job group 1.5✨
