WEEK 01
On week 1, we were asked to research and explore on TikTok Filters as we were to create effects and
filters later on EffectHouse. Then, we were asked to capture 3 filters we like and share from any platforms eg. Instagram,
Douyin, Tiktok etc. So here's 3 filters I like and I think it's interesting
to try on.
3 filters I like and share:
Brainstorm at least 3 ideas for our own filters:
Afterwards, we were asked to brainstorm at least 3 ideas for our own
filters (can get inspiration from Instagram filters as well) that we are going
to create later as a task. To be honest, I think it was quite hard to create a
AR filter which will be used commonly by the public and meanwhile I was
personally favourable of it. Hence, I combined with all the thoughts I had, I
decided to make some filters which I would frequently used it and so I think
the public might will too???😁

WEEK 02
On week 2, we were asked to install EffectHouse (if we haven't) and try exploring the functions and how does it works.
Firstly, we started off with trying out the face distortion effect first. So basically it looks like this inside, with different panels and the main panel we will be using the adjust and create face distortion is the inspector panel.
I've adjusted some particulars and created this face distortion effect which I'll name it "call me super ugley" AHAHA can't stop laughing when I used it on myself. Feel free to scan this QR code below to try this "ugley" filter out~

Then, we were asked to try doing this filter, which there'll be mini clones of you. Here's the tutorial link which the steps were guided. Instead of making two mini clones, I made 5. So it looks like a lecture hall with people sitting. Well, I named this filter "concert". Feel free to scan this QR code below to try the filter out~

Task 1
AR is the latest form of interactive design nowadays. Students are required to develop AR application with AR interactivity which will detect user face and expression. The required software to be used for this project is Effect House.
On this project, we are required to develop an AR filter in Effect House which is given a list of theme and I have chosen Beauty Effect as my topic.
On the first stage of developing the effect, we were to brainstorm ideas related to the topic. Well, to be honest, I couldn't think of anything to work on and have zero braincells to pop up a good idea.
After few days of consideration, I decided to work on a "Malaysia" theme beauty filter which I get to promote this filter on TikTok later to the audience. After consulting with Mr. Razif, and he agreed me to go for it so ya.
First stage of creating the filter before moving into Effect House is to design the visual elements. I used AI to design my assets. I wanted to use Hibiscus as my main theme as a represent of Malaysia which it's very beautiful and bloom in all ways.
Final Design Assets:

Next, I import them into Effect House and start to position them on the spots that I want to. I also added some makeup effect which were originally available in the software itself and downloaded other elements like highlights and glitter on face to make our face glow up when using it. Below is a progress screenshot in Effect House.

Before my first attempt, I actually have met some challenges in adjusting the position of the makeups and the file sizes are too big which had exceeded the limit size of 5GB in Effect House to publish a filter. Then, I figure out ways that were bothering the accurate position is I should rather use the eyeshadow effect in the software and change the texture into the texture I wanted.

Then for the HUGE file sizes that are bothering me to export it into a filter, I finally find ways to compress them in Effect House instead of going back to AI and export them in smaller size and import them into the software (which I've done quite a few times and it still doesn't work ;) Well in the software itself, there were a panel which you get to see how many spaces it takes up in the size, and from there, you can manually lower the quality and compress it into lower file size. Making the whole file size lower so you could export it as a filter in TikTok Yay!
So for my first attempt, I was actually only having two frames with one flower crown filter with background effect and another one is only beauty filter without background effect and headwear design.

Then after exporting it, and yes here's my 1st attempt on the filter. Then I sent it to Mr.Razif on Whatsapp to see whether any improvements that still can be made and see if it's okay to go with. And here's his replies:- frames look nice
- need indicator for user to tap screen otherwise they won't know
- add interactions like buttons to change frames
- make the background effect changes when frame changes
- make different headwear design
After getting the feedback, I designed a new headwear design also in Hibiscus but in different style and also made another background effect for the other frame and designed buttons to be used as interactivity for users. I also added captions like "Tap Buttons!" to inform users that buttons are alive and can be interact with.
Then, I added them into Effect House and arrange them accordingly to the expected positions. Then, to make the buttons alive and transit to its screen (next filter), visual scripting are used to make connections between buttons and visibility of layers. It was quite annoyed when doing this as it was quite like doing coding in Dreamweaver which I've took quite some time to figure out its functions, these and that. But luckily, Mr.Razif gave us a tutorial on how to make buttons on Effect House which is a lifesaver and things were finally progressing and works.

Reflection
On this task, I personally find that it's quite fun and very new to fresh things! As TikTok filter is actually quite common in this era now, which I think that most people have tried it out. So while in this task, I finally get the opportunity to create my own filter out. Initially, my first thought is to make a simple basic beauty effect that people would used it daily which make themselves look pretty. As to me, a successful filter would be a filter that have high usability. However, when I propose my idea to Mr.Razif, he told me that it was not as fun as he wanted to be, as it's very basic. We should try to make something fun so ya. Bunga Raya, Malaysia theme comes in mind.
In the stage of designing and positioning in Effect House, there were not much challenges faced. But while in the part of making different layers and frames for it to change was the hardest part in this task. As I don't know how to correctly separate layers and make them assets not collapsed together. Luckily, after few attempts, I find my way out.
So is this task, I learnt that not giving up and keep on discover, you'll always find a way that works out for the thing. I think it's very cool to make Malaysia famous in TikTok so promoting it, my lovely country, using TikTok is a good platform to do it.
Well, creating filter is a very cool thing to do, I think I would like to create and design more filters based on my personal preference in the future~
