Task 1: Project Proposal

We are required to do a proposal slides for the mobile application project as part of this project 1. Mr. Shamsul must give preliminary clearance before we can start redesigning an app that we believe lacks adequate user experience or interface design.

We, as students, are required to conduct polls, interviews, market analyses, and research on the chosen subject. Additionally, the paper needs to outline the main functions of the company's mobile app and show how the app works. The document will decide whether or not the concept for the mobile application is sound enough to move on to the following step of development. This task is an iterative process, therefore students are free to obtain input from their peers and the module coordinator during the assignment term to further develop their proposal.

Since our given topic for the project of this module is lifestyle, so I've been thinking to work with the entertainment scope and then maybe personal life tracker apps will do too. I used a Miro-board to brainstorm and write down three distinct application ideas early on in the process. This exercise was designed to examine several options and assess how likely they were to materialise. I then started to refine my ideas and make the proposal presentations.

fig 1 - first option: Pavilion Bukit Jalil Shopping App

1st option: Pavilion Bukit Jalil App (shopping)

Overall, this app have issues in its layout, organisation in text and image. Image used could be better as it has make the app looks a bit complicated and messy with too many colours appearing on the same page. Besides, too many buttons used could also lower the simplicity of the app. Some images in the app are also missing and not shown.

fig 2 - second option: Loudspeaker App

2nd option: LoudSpeaker App (entertainment)

I think the biggest problem of this app is the used image for its carousel as the image all used are all the same and bad designs. This would create confusing layout. Besides, the borders size and text sizes are too big which lead the layout to be messy. The buttons in the apps are also not easy to be look at first glance, needed to take a couple of seconds to find the buttons.

fig 3 - third option: Period Tracker App

3rd option: Period Tracker App by Gp Apps (tracker)

The major issues of this app are colour options, too much graphics, confusing layout, non-consistency and complicated layout. This cause a bad designed app. In an application, should have avoid too much graphical elements to make the appearance clean. Besides, achieving consistency is very important too. It has made the buttons hard to find and a lot of functions are only can be accessed with the paid membership. The analysis of data is also being presented in a very unclear method.

Final chosen option: Period Tracker App by Gp Apps

Hence, my final choice is the Period Tracker App by GP Apps. As first reason, the design is really cluttered which it doesn't provide simplicity and clarity in an app itself should. Next, the buttons are hard to be found which too much visual elements have been used. This cause the interaction of user reduce. Besides, a lot of functions and features in the app cannot be accessed due to paid membership. That's why I've chosen this app to be redesigned. Mr. Shamsul also agreed me to go with this one.

After picking this app as my option, we were then asked to conduct an initial evaluation of the product's UX design. Take note of the product's layout, visual design, user flow, and other key UX elements.

Evaluation Slides of Period Tracker App by GP Apps:

After finishing this assignment, I was better able to understand how to proceed with my proposal using the findings I've researched on the evaluation slides bringing into this proposal slides and finished everything—from the introduction to the plan for my user study.

Feedback

Week 4 // 27.04.23

  • Yes, go with the Period Tracker app. It has a highly crowded appearance and many of the features you mentioned are not user-friendly for those non-membership users.
  • It requires extensive redesign.
  • Ensure that you adhere to all the task requirements and input them into the slides.

  • Reflection

As a UI/UX designer, developing the concept proposal for the Period Tracker app makeover has been a fun and rewarding experience. It enabled me to examine the app's current condition and pinpoint its advantages and disadvantages. As this app is something me as a female will be using frequently which it's a very lifestyle app so I was really excited to dig deep down on its UI and UX to understand better the principles of a good app, what should have and what should have not. My redesign strategy has been greatly influenced by the user research and feedback I've gotten on what users really want and need from the app. The proposal's main goal was to improve the user experience by addressing major pain points. I was especially interested in enhancing the menu navigation so that users could quickly find their wanted features or functions. I also wanted to improve the security of the apps, so that users could feel safe and protected when they input their personal and privacy datas into the app as some might feel very insecure to input sensitive datas and they feel shy to.

I became even more motivated to build an aesthetically pleasing and user-friendly app that would make a positive impression on consumers as I emphasised the influence of mobile app design on user experience. It is inspirational and fulfilling to have the chance to improve an app that I've been using frequently in my life and get to understand the contents inside also to refine it into a better app that I wanted. I can't wait to get started on the remainder of the redesign process.

The value of research-driven design and incremental enhancements based on user feedback has been reinforced by this experience. I am convinced that my efforts will produce a remarkable software that improves consumers' entire using experiences. To sum up, this proposal is the start of a meaningful design journey, and I'm excited to make an app that will delight and satisfy consumers while capturing the objective of the app's existancy.
