Tasks

We must convert our dissertation into a published design for this project. The design must accurately reflect the subject of our dissertation, and it must be submitted via fliphtml5. The draft dissertation should also be revised depending on the comments received and turned in to Turnitin for plagiarism detection.

Graphics and Visual References:

Fig 1 - Visual & Graphics Reference

I started by gathering graphic resources for my design concept into an album which are related to my topic and keywords like technology, apps, banking, elderly, these and that. In Adobe Indesign, I produced a rough layout design for the introduction and contents. My ideas are to create something simple and clean as regarding to my topic, I would like to apply designs which elderly would like to see and without any designs that are too tech savvy in gradient colour form.

Meanwhile, I've also revised my draft dissertation and its introduction part after receiving feedbacks from Dr.Hayati. Here are some publication design progress.

I was actually quite confused on which one to pick as final cover the publication, but after receiving Dr. Hayati's feedback which she thinks both are fine but need to amend with the font and it's text height to achieve the minimalist concept. She thinks that #2 is more manly and #3 will be more feminine so asking me to see whether which I like so at last, I picked the #3 one and done some amendments to make it neutral instead of being too feminine.

Besides, this was how my table of contents supposed to look like at first, but due to readability that elderly would more prefer, Dr.Hayati suggested me to use the other design which I've applied it on my final publication design.

Due to my not really good in illustrating graphics, Dr.Hayati suggested me to take pics online which are free copyrighted like website from Freepik etc to use as my visual graphics.

Final Dissertation Refinement:

Dr. Hayati provided feedback, and I edited my draft dissertation once more to make it final. I made corrections to the section 1 introduction, picture credit list, table and figure numbering, and contents numbering. I couldn't remember where I got the pictures for the credit list as I mentioned earlier, fortunately, I contacted Dr Hayati, and she said there's a website where we can verify the picture sources from which I used Google Image. Dr. Hayati noticed that I was missing a conceptual framework, therefore I've added one as well. Additionally, I expanded the list of references because I had before overlooked several of them. I then went back and double-checked each paragraph's grammatical and spelling rules for numbers. Before submitting the design, I added the updated writing to the design publication. I then sent my final dissertation into Turnitin to have it checked for plagiarism.

Feedback

Week 9

General Feedback: The design theme must be related to your dissertation topic.

Specific Feedback: Try to avoid gradient color, as based on your ideas of elderly designs, designs wouldn’t be as it. Can use scenarios like an elderly person doing something as a visual graphic.

Week 11

General Feedback: The design theme must be related to your dissertation topic. And remember to choose a wise font and layout for readability. There are too few publication designs I could see on and give feedback, try doing more.

Specific Feedback: To relate to your idea of minimalism, can try adjusting the texts to more condensed and in taller height. I’m ok with both cover page designs but one is more manly and another is more feminine, the last choice will be depending on you. Your illustration is a bit weak, you may try finding pics or graphics from websites that have free sources. I’m ok with the color theme which is very earthy and very elderly.

Week 12

General Feedback: The design theme must be related to your dissertation topic. And remember to choose a wise font and layout for readability. There are too few publication designs I could see on and give feedback, try doing more.

Specific Feedback: Not too many updates were done, couldn’t give much feedback. The introduction part should be amended, as it wasn’t written this way. It was rationale combined with the theme and put into a Research Background section. The table of contents is better off without the graphic elements, or maybe find something suitable to apply to it. The conceptual framework is missing. The numbering of contents is not correct either; remember to amend it on Google Docs and name it as Final Dissertation.

Reflection

Even though I was first really happy that the designing stage had finally arrived. However, this task took a lot of time because creating 100+ pages takes much longer than writing. My layout can be intimidating to read in when there is a large block of text, so I wanted to make sure the reading flowed beautifully from column to column. There is a lot to format from the dissertation writing. Since my dissertation contains many tables and figures, redesigning them also required some effort. However, formatting the text made me go back and review my dissertation writing, which allowed me to find some typing errors and fix them while designing the publication.

Aside from that, it took me some time to come up with a design concept for my dissertation publication because I first wanted to do something different from my Design Research Methodology slide designs. However, after considering numerous layouts and styles, I ultimately chose to stick with the minimalist idea because it is still appropriate for the topic, is more likely to be preferred by elderly people, and is related to the theme. It took me a while to understand the conceptual framework in the introduction part. However, after discussing it with Dr. Hayati and having my introduction and literature review read, I eventually understood the idea and was able to summarise the point for it.
