Reflection
Experience: Throughout the whole journey for semester 1, with all the tasks I've done, I think the hardest task was task 3A - creating a typeface. This one was tough as at first I've no idea on how to start and Mr.Vinod only provide basics tutorial on how to construct so with that, I'll have to explore wider on my designs and thinking on how to construct it with just the basics knowledge I have. But still in the end, I managed to go through it. Looking back, every week is always occupied with tasks given. Like it's always endless but now then it has already come to an end. I enjoy all the tasks given actually. They're fun and also interesting to see how our outcomes are. Looking back all the tasks I've progressed, it was blood, sweat and tears but I'm satisfied with them. Designing a typeface or typography was hard, but express its meaning in your design is even harder.
Observation: In semester 1's Typography tasks, I've found that it's hard to really express the meaning of the words with our own designs. As from our perspectives, it may mean what it's but from another, it might not. Designs are not for self, are for the audience to observe. So it's very important for us to create designs with its expression in it for the viewers to understand what we're trying to bring out. Besides, I find that editorial for magazines and layouts aren't as easy as I thought it was. We must make sure the gaps between texts aren't too loose, kerning, tracking, letter spacing, leadings etc. To make sure you have a good layout for viewers to see, the things above or even more must be adjusted in a right way. I've also find that every typefaces have their own characteristics and they're all constructed under a same x-height. This is how a balanced typeface are.
Findings: With all the tasks given, I've learn on how to express words in its meaning without using florist or outstanding typefaces and graphical elements. As from the beginning, we were limited in using typefaces and only minor graphical elements are allowed. With that, I am able to explore more on how to express words in letterforms and designs instead of depending on typefaces and graphical elements. Besides, I've also get the knowledge and tips on how to create a good layout for editorial. With all the pre-recorded lectures watched and few tips given by Mr.Vinod, once we remember all the things to be paid attention, the progress will went smoothly and so is the outcome. Then, I've also learn on how to construct a typeface!!! Which I think this is the most satisfied achievement I've did for Typography :,D never thought of typeface are constructed so hard, like we need to gather all the shapes, strokes, paths, masking them all together just to create a letter. Last but not least, is publishing a sticker pack in Telegram hahaha which I might do more in the future because it's fun, might start exploring on other platforms too~
